Worldwide born each year about one million of children with heart disease and congenital heart defects . Of these about half would need surgery within the first year of life. But in many countries in Africa, Asia or Eastern Europe shortage of medical facilities and personnel capable of operating . Or families can not afford the cost.
The Foundation "help children" through campaign "Hearts of Children" since 2005 raises funds to send teams on mission abroad Italian doctors volunteers who specialize in heart operations on children. Other young patients are brought to Italy, to be operated directly in our country at some hospitals.
During each mission abroad, the average duration of one week, doctors volunteers can operate free of charge between ten and fifteen children, and to visit dozens. But their task is not limited to this: they have an important role in the training of local doctors and check for appropriate equipment at local hospitals.
In Cambodia there are around 40,000 children suffering from cardiac malformations , but there is only one hospital where they can be made free of charge. This hospital is the ' "Angkor Hospital for Children in Siem Reap that" help children "claims since 2006.
